The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) has entered a new long‑term agreement with Boingo Wireless to deploy next‑generation 5G and Wi‑Fi networks across its maritime, terminal, and port facilities.
The deal underscores the Authority’s intent to modernise its digital infrastructure and enhance operations at its marine terminals.
Under the contract, Boingo will upgrade and expand wireless networks at the Port Authority’s terminals and associated waterfront infrastructure.
As redevelopment progresses on critical projects, the enhanced connectivity will support secure, high‑capacity communications for port operations, terminal services, and logistical coordination.
Port Authority Chairman, Kevin O’Toole, said: “Connectivity is as essential to travel today as runways, railroads and roadways.
“Our commitment to strengthening our digital infrastructure ensures that the millions of people who rely on our facilities each day experience secure, high‑speed connectivity that keeps pace with modern expectations.”

Port Authority Executive Director Rick Cotton, stated: “Through this new contract, we will deliver best‑in‑class free and fast Wi-Fi, impeccable cellular phone service, and superb connectivity on all fronts to all travelers at our facilities. In addition, our new data transmission capabilities provide top grade connectivity for our ground service workers and other back‑of‑house partners.
“These across‑the‑board state‑of‑the‑art technology upgrades will support customer service second to none at all of our facilities.”
The agreement, approved in June 2025, continues a partnership that began in 1999 and calls for major expansions to neutral host 5G, Wi‑Fi, and private network infrastructure at marine terminals.

Service will remain free to the public, and the contract runs through 2038 with an option to extend to 2043.
Facilities covered include marine terminals such as Port Newark‑Elizabeth Port Authority Marine Terminal, alongside major transport hubs and tunnels.
These upgraded converged cellular and Wi‑Fi networks will support essential port and maritime functions such as equipment automation, IoT sensors, terminal operations, security systems, and seamless communication between vessels and shore systems.
