Maritime Innovation Week 2025 brought together ports, technology partners, policymakers and researchers across to examine how digital systems, workforce capability and decarbonisation are reshaping port operations.
Delegates contributed to the Port Skills Blueprint 2026–2035 and the Maritime Masterplan 2026–2035, while early sessions outlined emerging skill requirements driven by automation, data-led operations and clean energy transitions. New initiatives, including a Carbon Literacy for ports programme, were also introduced.
The opening day focused on the changing skills needed for future port operations, driven by automation, data-led decision-making and the transition to clean energy.
Day 2 explored the technologies underpinning smart port systems. Sessions at BT Tower highlighted how hyperconnectivity, private 5G networks and advances in maritime tracking are becoming essential to modern operations.
Speakers from the UK Space Agency and Ericsson outlined the growing integration of space-enabled services and secure private cellular networks, noting their role in improving safety, automation, resilience and real-time coordination across port environments.
The final day showcased international case studies from ports including Esbjerg, Valencia, Vienna, Dover and Freeport East, demonstrating how global collaboration is shaping approaches to digitalisation, clean energy infrastructure and innovation at scale.
The week also saw the launch of the third cohort of Venture Connect and the presentation of the Maritime Innovation Week Awards, recognising achievements across technology, sustainability, engineering and skills.

Reflecting the Government’s stance, Maritime Minister Keir Mather MP said: “The maritime sector keeps our country safe, the economy moving and supports skilled jobs across the UK, with shipping alone worth over £16 billion ($21 billion) to our economy.
“That’s why I’m delighted to see industry leaders like the Port of Tyne championing Maritime Innovation Week, helping spotlight the sector and promote the technology, skills, and infrastructure we need to keep the UK at the cutting edge of global shipping well into the future.”
Concluding the week, Dr Jo North noted the collaborative momentum generated: “It’s been a fantastic week and this is a real step in the right direction for the future of maritime. What we’ve seen this year is an extraordinary level of collaboration with ports, tech partners, academia and policymakers all working together. The ideas and partnerships formed here this week will directly shape the way we plan, build and operate the ports of tomorrow.”
