International battery recycling company SK Tes has announced plans to build a new facility near the Port of Rotterdam.
The facility specialises in recycling used lithium batteries, electric vehicle batteries, and production waste, extracting vital raw materials.
The plant processes discarded electric vehicle batteries, recalled units, and production debris, recovering valuable ‘black matter’—a substance rich in essential metals such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel, which are reintegrated into the battery manufacturing supply chain.

By recovering valuable elements from used batteries, SK tes aims to reduce the environmental effect of battery disposal while also meeting the rising demand for rare raw materials necessary to manufacture new batteries.
The plant can handle up to 10,000 tonnes of material each year and wants to increase its capacity by expanding into an adjacent property.
The new Rotterdam facility will initially be 10,000 square metres in size, with the potential to expand to 40,000 square metres.
