Sirius Insight, Cambridge Pixel launch AI maritime surveillance solution

Sirius Insight has chosen Cambridge Pixel as its partner to create an AI-powered maritime surveillance and situational awareness solution to monitor the UK coastline.

Sirius Insight has incorporated Cambridge Pixel’s radar tracking software into its services, enabling the integration of radar video data from onboard vessel radars.

According to Cambridge Pixel, this data is combined with supplementary track reports, such as Automatic Identification System (AIS), creating a more comprehensive view of maritime activity.

Once detected by radar, pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras automatically focus on the target. These visuals are then analysed by a computer vision system that classifies the target’s actions.

The data, stored in the cloud, supports real-time monitoring and alerting of unusual activities like vessels not broadcasting AIS signals, harmful fishing practices, or illegal smuggling, thereby facilitating timely responses and enhanced inter-agency collaboration.

Malcolm Glaister, Chief Executive Officer of Sirius Insight, commented: “We were delighted to partner with Cambridge Pixel, a company with experience working with some of the world’s largest defence companies, on this project.

“It is testimony to the UK maritime sector’s commitment to innovation that Sirius Insight, a rapidly scaling UK AI tech business with extensive maritime domain expertise, has successfully collaborated with Cambridge Pixel to develop capabilities which improve safety and security at sea.

The project includes multiple solutions from Cambridge Pixel’s range of modular software, including AVx Video Link and RadarWatch.

AVx Video Link distributes camera video from remote locations for efficient display, recording, and analysis, while RadarWatch offers real-time display of sensor data, maps, and video feeds from multiple cameras and radars.

David Johnson, CEO of Cambridge Pixel, noted: “RadarWatch works seamlessly with many different radar and camera sensors and by implementing augmented vision, we can allow targets to be labelled within the camera video footage, enabling faster, clearer and better-informed decisions. It’s an ideal partnership with Sirius Insight’s pioneering AI technology.”

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency has just given the Port of Long Beach more than $2.6 million to secure key infrastructure and maintain the safe passage of goods.
