Mediterranean Shipping Company’s (MSC) Empire Service has made its inaugural call at Port Everglades, restoring a direct container shipping connection between the Florida port and Asia.
The service called at Port Everglades on 17 July and is being handled by Port Everglades Terminal, LLC.
Under the revised rotation, MSC has replaced calls at Jacksonville and Miami with Norfolk and Port Everglades. The service connects Shanghai and Ningbo in China, Busan in South Korea and Rodman in Panama.
Port Everglades will serve as the final US call before vessels return to Shanghai.

MSC said the revised network was intended to “enhance service reliability and schedule stability” across its Asia-US East Coast network.
The previous MSC service providing Port Everglades with a direct Far East connection was the Santana Service, which was also handled by Port Everglades Terminal.
Joseph Morris, Chief Executive Officer and Port Director at Port Everglades, said: “By MSC selecting our port, it demonstrates that our strategic investments to boost our operational efficiency are meeting global market needs.
“The Empire Service vessels anticipated to call our port have a TEU capacity up to approximately 8,800, placing them among the largest to berth here and will help speed additional goods to market.”
Port Everglades currently has 26 container services, primarily covering trade with the Caribbean and Latin America. The port handled a record 1.17 million TEUs during its last financial year.
