A ship’s pilot died on Tuesday October 4, 2016 while trying to board a cargo ship in Gravesend, Kent, the Port of London Authority (PLA) has announced.

While attempting to board the ship, Sunmi, bound for Spain,  in Gravesend Reach, the pilot was “involved in an accident”, according the PLA. Further information on the nature of the accident, nor the pilot’s name has yet been given.

The PLA said: “PLA teams on duty, the emergency services and the RNLI did all they could subsequent to the accident, but tragically the pilot passed away.”

Robin Mortimer, CEO of the PLA, said: “Our deepest condolences are with our colleagues' family and friends at this very difficult time… We have been in touch with the family and are offering whatever support we can.”

Two investigations, one by the Marine Accident Investigation Branch and one by the PLA, have now been launched to determine the cause.
