Port of Callao’s extends South Terminal by 400 metres

Mota-Engil has commissioned ShibataFenderTeam to provide fender solutions for the new extended quay of the Port of Callao’s South Terminal.

The DP World-owned terminal in Lima has been recently extended by 400 metres, bringing the terminal’s total length to 1,050 metres, making it the longest in the country. This expansion allows the South Terminal to service up to three vessels simultaneously, including two vessels of up to 400 metres in length.

ShibataFenderTeam designed, manufactured, delivered, and tested 22 sets of Cone Fenders (SPC 1300, G2.9), with closed-box steel panels (2300×4850 millimetres) and 40 millimetres thick UHMW-PE sliding plates.

The project scope also included 22 T-Head bollards with a capacity of 150 tonnes.

The specific requirements of this project demanded a customised design and manufacturing approach. First, ShibataFenderTeam’s in-house engineering team designed a solution comprised of Cone Fenders with a strict tolerance of +/-5 per cent, exceeding the industry’s standard of +/-10 per cent.

The fenders were also designed to have a minimum service life of 20 years to support the terminal’s goal of carbon neutrality by 2030 through reduced replacements.

In the second step, this precise tolerance was reportedly ensured through quality control during manufacturing at ShibataFenderTeam’s compound and mixing facility in Malaysia.

The process concluded at the same facility with the testing of the fenders to confirm the tighter tolerances.

DP World completed the $400 million extension project at the Port of Callao earlier this summer, increasing container handling capacity at the South Terminal by 80 per cent.
