  • Shanghai Yangshan Deepwater Port opens two-way channel to better serve Shanghai Pilot Free Trade Zone

Shanghai Yangshan Deepwater Port’s launched its two-way navigation channel this week following a successful trial period.

Two-way navigation into Yangshan, one of the world’s largest deepwater ports, will provide greater access for customers calling the recently established Shanghai Pilot Free Trade Zone, where registration system rules will be relaxed for shippers.

Speaking to China News, Chen Rongyuan, chairman of Shanghai International Port, said that with ships now able to pass safely in either direction it will help Shanghai to maintain its position as one of the most important ports in the world, whilst helping to increase capacity, reduce shipping costs and improve safety.

In preparation for the launch of the enhanced channel, as many as 123 vessels took part in trial navigations by the end of August this year, according to the head of the Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration, Xu Guoyi.

Yangshan Deepwater Port’s container handling capacity was recorded at 14.15 million last year and is expected to jump to 15 million by the end of the current year, said Chen.
