As a platinum sponsor of Port Technology’s virtual Smart Digital Ports of the Future 2021 Conference, held March 29 to April 1, Trelleborg’s marine and infrastructure operation’s Managing Director for Denmark, Tommy Guldhammer Mikkelsen, will discuss the importance of digitalisation to drive a more efficient, safe, sustainable and connected port of the future at the event.

Titled ‘From SmartPorts to Sustainable Ports’, Mikkelsen’s presentation will be held March 31, 2:15PM BST. In the session, he will highlight how SmartPort by Trelleborg, which connects port operations, provides operators with operational real-time data to improve decision making.

This reduces risk, optimising maintenance spend and enhancing operational efficiency – each of which can support sustainable gains for ports. The session will also see Mikkelsen discuss Trelleborg’s suite of SmartPort products and solutions, which includes fenders, mooring equipment, ship performance monitoring, and navigation systems equipped with sensors and underpinned by cloud technologies.

Mikkelsen said: “The events of 2020 have had an unforeseen but positive impact on the role of technology and the digitalisation of our sector. While there was already recognition of the importance of smart initiatives to deliver on sustainability targets, such as meeting the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) objective of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 50% from 2008 levels by 2050, this has accelerated during 2020 as the value of automation has been realised.

Operationally, the electronic capture and exchange of data has proved not only to be quicker, more reliable and more efficient but safer, removing the need for physical contact, and more sustainable too.

“Building on this momentum is therefore an opportunity to create further increasingly sustainable operations and infrastructure throughout the value chain and at all touchpoints. As pioneers of smart infrastructure, through SmartPort and our smarter approach to product innovation, we’re proud to sit at the forefront of the drive for progressive ports to embrace digitalisation for a more sustainable and connected port of the future.”

Mikkelsen will also participate in a panel session focused on the impact of COVID-19 on ports and the consequent need for new emerging revenue or business models (April 1, 9:15AM GMT).
