Saudi Arabia’s maritime sector has experienced a 13 per cent increase in cargo throughput in 2022, handling roughly 237 million tonnes compared to 210 million tonnes in 2021.
According to year-end figures for 2022, container volumes increased by 3.2 per cent to 10.355 million TEU from 10.035 million TEU the previous year.
A closer look at the subcategories reveals a 5 per cent increase in imported and exported boxes to 4.839 million TEU from 4.628 million TEU in the prior period.
Transshipments increased by 2 per cent to reach 5.516 million tonnes, up from 5.406 million TEU in 2021.
Similarly, 973,000 automobiles, a 25 per cent increase from 778,000 units prior, rolled off incoming vessels.

Over the course of 2022, the country’s trade gateways also welcomed 933,000 travellers, a 36 per cent increase over 2021, when 688,000 pax touched down on its soil.
