The Russian Foreign Ministry has warned that the Saudi-led coalition’s plans to launch an assault on Yemen’s biggest port-city, Al Hudaydah, will greatly impact the humanitarian situation in the war-torn country.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in a statement published on the ministry’s official website that the coalition’s plans to attack Yemen’s biggest port of Hudaydah is causing serious concerns.

A naval blockade by a Saudi-led coalition carrying out air strikes against the rebels is depriving the population of life-sustaining commodities and services.

Thousands of civilians have been killed in Yemen since the escalation in March 2015 of the conflict between forces loyal to President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi and those allied to the Houthi rebel movement.

Zakharova added that battles in this area “would not only inevitably lead to a mass exodus of the [local] population but would also de facto cut the [Yemeni] capital of Sanaa from… food and humanitarian aid supplies.”
