Jaunzeltini, the largest terminal operator based at the Port of Riga, has introduced a roster of new technologies to improve cargo processing and handling.

Jaunzeltini specializes in the processing of containerized timber, and has developed and introduced several innovations to help boost efficiency in loading timber into containers.

The first of these is the “loading plate”, which allows the automatic loading of timber into containers via a specially design “plate”.

Chairperson of the Board Artūrs Veispāls said: “These ‘loading plates’ for cargo containerization are used at many sawmills across the world; while in ports, at least in Latvia, we are the first to apply it”.

To increase cargo processing efficiency the company also purchased Combilift equipment – allowing for quicker container handling.

Highlighting the advantages of the new equipment’s greater manoeuvrability and cargo handling ability, Veispāls added: “Currently, we can use one piece of equipment to replace two heavy vehicles, which used to be used for the transportation, placement and loading of a container”.

The company has chosen to avoid sourcing the new technology from overseas companies, purchasing all upgrades from Latvian-based technology suppliers.

The port of Riga is the largest port in Latvia, processing 33.7 million tonnes of cargo in 2017.
