Qatar has awarded construction contracts worth a total of US$4.22 billion, part of which is its New Port Project.

The New Port Project is located just south of capital Doha and the project is expected to be completed by 2020.

The port will be built on an area spanning 2600ha at an estimated cost of around US$7.4 billion, according to Albawaba Business.

The project includes a new port, a new base for the Qatar Emiri Naval Forces and ‘Qatar Economic Zone 3’.

Once the first phase of the project gets completed in 2016, capacity will have reached an anticipated annual capacity of two million containers.

The New Port Project’s full capacity is expected to reach six million containers with the completion of the last two phases.
