In the best technical paper of 2014, Managing Director of simulation and emulation software specialist TBA, Dr Yvo Saanen, offers an insight into an innovative new method of terminal training that seeks to address the efficiency gaps in the manual training of operational control staff.
The new method of training entitled ‘gamification’, which is the name used to define virtual game training, is the process whereby operational control staff can be trained in a virtual environment before going into live operations.
Saanen considers this to be a better alternative to traditional methods of training, with the effectiveness of traditional on-the-job and classroom training to be as little as 10% as effective when compared to gamification.
Operational control staff can be trained and have their capabilities tested so that they are better able to deal with uncertainty, peak loads and other challenges that come while working within in a real-life terminal.
