Kaohsiung Port’s seventh container terminal could have up to four terminal operators managing and operating the terminals at the terminal by May, 2016, with DP World and PSA among the operators involved in talks to invest in the project, according to the Journal of Commerce.

Three Taiwan shipping lines, including Evergreen and Yang Ming operate terminals at the port, as well as other big names, including OOCL and Hanjin Shipping

The container terminal project is set to cost more than US$1 billion and involves the construction of a more than 690 metre wide container yard and two-and-a-half berths.

The new facility will allow the Port of Kaohsiung to handle 22,000 TEU mega-ships and is currently set to be open in 2018.

It was reported in early 2015 that land reclamation had commenced at the Intercontinental Container Terminal in Taiwan, with work expected to be completed in 2017.

Kaohsiung Port was also crowned Asia’s first eco-port in late 2014 by the European Sea Ports Organisation, and has been promoting a series of green policies since 2012.
