PSA has launched a tender for the upgrade of the infrastructure at the Sines Container Terminal (Terminal XXI) in Portugal, giving the green light for terminal expansion.

In a statement the Port of Sines said the initial phase of the expansion will include the construction of 204 meters of quay and increase overall quay length to 1,150 meters by the end of 2021.

Once all stages of the expansion are complete, the Port’s quay will be approximately 1,750 meters in size.

Terminal XXI is a part of the main international maritime routes and is capable of receiving the world’s biggest container ships.

The expansion will improve it yet further and enable to receive several maga-ships simultaneously and increase its operational offer, according to the Port of Sines.

In October 2019 the Ports of Sines struck an agreement with the Algarve Authority (APS) and PSA Sines to amend the original concession contract to allow new investment for the terminal’s expansion.

In addition to allowing the terminal to receive more mega-ships, the expansion will also increase its overall capacity from 2.3 million to 4.1 million TEU.

In February 2020, APS signed the Contract for the 3rd Phase of Expansion of the East Breakwater of the Port of Sines, including the extension of the breakwater by 750 meters, which will allow to reinforce the protection of the east part of the Port of Sines where Terminal XXI is located.
