Power2X, Advario to create world-scale e-SAF centre in Rotterdam

Power2X and Advario are working together to create a global-scale manufacturing and storage hub for sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF) and synthetic, ultra-low carbon fuels in the Port of Rotterdam.

The Power2X manufacturing plant will be capable of producing more than 250,000 tonnes of e-SAF, a non-fossil synthetic fuel derived from green hydrogen.

It will be the biggest e-SAF project disclosed to date, producing enough ultra-low carbon fuel to power around 7,000 flights between Amsterdam and New York each year.

The facility will employ imported green methanol made from green hydrogen and biogenic carbon as feedstock, as well as locally produced green hydrogen.

Green methanol will be imported from regions where renewable energy and green hydrogen are available.

Advario will build a storage and logistics facility with a capacity of about 230,000 cubic meters, supported by maritime and rail capabilities, to provide a steady supply chain for green molecules.

Occo Roelofsen, Founder and CEO of Power2X, said: “This strategically positioned site and innovative business-model aims to make competitive production of e-SAF at global scale in the heart of Europe possible. It underscores our leadership in driving decarbonisation and delivering sustainable solutions for the future.”

Boudewijn Siemons, CEO of the Port of Rotterdam Authority, said: “SAF production facilities in Rotterdam currently supply 24 per cent of Europe’s aviation fuel need. According to the European Union’s target, 20 per cent of all aviation fuel is to be produced from renewable sources.

“The production of e-SAF in Rotterdam is therefore important to meet future SAF demand. This project by Advario and Power2X is an example of the successful conversion of land in the port of Rotterdam from fossil fuel to green, sustainable production.”

Recently, the Port of Rotterdam Authority and Swietelsky Rail Benelux B.V. signed a contract to build a bundle of six tracks sufficient for 740-metre trains as part of the new Maasvlakte-Zuid rail yard.
