Port of Tauranga sees strong Q1 growth in cargo & TEUs
Port of Tauranga Limited has reported a strong start to the 2026 financial year, with cargo volumes rising in the first quarter.

In the three months to 30 September, total trade increased by 5.9 per cent year-on-year (YoY) to 6.6 million tonnes, while container volumes grew 9 per cent to 319,649 TEUs.

Chief Executive Leonard Sampson told the company’s Annual Meeting of Shareholders that the performance was driven by higher bulk imports and containerised export transhipment.

He said: “It is pleasing to see increased cargo volumes despite the berth capacity constraints at the container terminal. We remain focused on productivity gains to deliver the best possible service at New Zealand’s busiest port.”

Based on these results, and assuming no major changes in market conditions, Port of Tauranga expects full-year underlying Net Profit After Tax to fall between NZ$137 million ($77.6 million) and NZ$147 million ($83.3 million)

Port of Tauranga’s growth in both bulk and container volumes highlights the ongoing demand for efficient port services and the strategic importance of productivity improvements to support long-term trade growth.
