The Port of San Diego and Pasha Automotive Services have completed the first US shore power commissioning for a domestic pure car/truck carrier.
The Jean Anne, a Jones Act RoRo vessel operating between San Diego and Honolulu, is now able to plug into the terminal’s electrical grid while berthed.
Shore power reduces emissions from diesel engines, including nitrogen oxides, sulphur oxides, particulate matter, and greenhouse gases.
The terminal’s new shore power system — forms part of a $6.6 million investment supported by $2.5 million from the Volkswagen Environmental Mitigation Trust for California.
Earlier this year, both the Jean Anne and her sister vessel, the Marjorie C, were fitted to use shore power.
Pasha Distribution Services has also introduced all-electric car haulers at the terminal.

All of the port’s cargo facilities now have shore power capability.
The system supports the port’s Maritime Clean Air Strategy and meets California Air Resources Board requirements for RoRo vessels to use shore power or an exhaust-capture “bonnet” system while alongside. National City Marine Terminal now offers both options.
The Port of San Diego has expanded zero-emission equipment across its cargo operations, including all-electric mobile harbour cranes and a renewable-powered microgrid at the Tenth Avenue terminal.
The port’s 2024 Maritime Air Emissions Inventory reports emissions reductions since 2019, including a 46 per cent drop in diesel particulate matter, a 32 per cent decrease in nitrogen oxides, and a 10 per cent reduction in greenhouse gases.
