The Port of Barcelona Management Board has approved the launch of a tender to award a concession for a public multipurpose maritime terminal on the Príncep d’Espanya wharf, following the expiry of the current concession this year.
The new terminal will continue to handle non-containerised general cargo, a key traffic segment for the port’s strategic positioning.
The tender is designed to ensure the service remains competitive, open to third parties, and aligned with local logistical and industrial needs.
The facility will cover 87,425 square metres (m²), including existing office buildings and parking, which will be retained, while other structures may be refurbished or replaced by the successful bidder.

The terminal will handle general cargo and certain mixed traffic, but specialised traffic such as passengers, dry or liquid bulk is excluded.
The specifications set a minimum volume for non-containerised cargo to prevent the facility from focusing solely on containerships, while still allowing for some mixed general RoRo and vertical handling containers.
The tender sets an indicative investment of around €3.6 million ($4.2 million) in civil works and facilities.

The terminal must operate at least three mobile cranes (two under five years old at the start of the concession) and six sets of auxiliary goods-handling equipment.
Additional specialised machinery will be required if traffic exceeds 15,000 TEUs per year or 50,000 tonnes of RoRo cargo.
The concession will run for 16 years, with the option of early termination from year 10 if port operations require reorganisation, with compensation for unamortised investments.
In line with the port’s decarbonisation strategy, the tender incorporates environmental criteria including energy efficiency, renewable energy generation, water and electricity conservation, and the potential electrification of machinery.
The port confirmed that bids will be assessed on both technical and financial criteria.
