Port Nelson has handled its largest vessel on record, with the arrival of the Maersk Cap Jackson in May.
The vessel measures 264.32 metres in length and weighs 77,000 tonnes, around 7,000 tonnes heavier than the port’s previous largest caller. It has a capacity of up to 4,600 TEUs.
During its visit, the vessel was loaded with a range of export cargo from Te Tauihu, including apples, fish, meat, beer, wine, timber and dairy products destined for global markets.

Handling ships of this size requires detailed operational planning due to Port Nelson’s constrained channel and berth configurations.
The port’s marine team and pilots conducted extensive risk assessments ahead of the call to ensure safe navigation and efficient port operations.
The call highlights both the port’s ability to accommodate larger vessels and the importance of marine expertise in managing increasingly complex shipping operations.
