The Western Australian Government has confirmed the award of a dredging contract to Jan De Nul Australia for the new Zone 5 Bypass Channel at the Port of Port Hedland.
The AU$50 million ($35 million) project, led by Pilbara Ports, is intended to improve safety, resilience and vessel movements at one of the world’s largest bulk export ports.
The bypass channel will allow vessels to navigate around a steeper section of the port’s 42-kilometre shipping channel, known as Zone 5.
The development is designed to complement existing passing lanes and refuge areas, supporting safer navigation for large bulk carriers operating within narrow tidal windows.
The project forms part of the Western Australian Government’s wider Seven Cities infrastructure strategy aimed at supporting long-term economic growth across the state.

According to the government, the channel design was developed in consultation with major port users and supported by navigational simulations, environmental assessments and geotechnical investigations.
Dredging activity is expected to begin in September 2026.

Kevin Michel, Pilbara MLA, added: “This investment is an important step forward for Port Hedland and the Pilbara region, helping to ensure the port continues to operate safely and efficiently for years to come.”
