Maritime Innovation Week: Ports enter the 5G era

On Day 2 of Maritime Innovation Week at London’s BT Tower, hosted by the Port of Tyne, Ericsson highlighted at the “Smart, Secure and Connected” panel how private 5G networks can enable automation, enhance operational efficiency, and strengthen cybersecurity in modern ports.

The discussion focused on the practical challenges and opportunities facing port operators today, from achieving reliable connectivity to advancing maritime tracking and strengthening cybersecurity.

From next-generation tracking systems to private 5G networks and AI-driven autonomy, the message was clear — ports are entering a new era of hyperconnected infrastructure.

Setting the tone, Adam Schipper, Director of Transportation & Logistics at Ericsson, emphasised the foundational role of advanced networks in digital transformation.

Schipper said: “The foundation of a smart port starts with a 5G cellular network.”

Additionally, he highlighted that many operational inefficiencies and safety risks stem from poor connectivity. A private 5G cellular network, he argued, directly resolves this.

Furthermore, Schipper outlined two core needs driving the adoption of private cellular networks:

  • Seamless Mobility – Ports are high-density, constantly moving ecosystems. Cranes, autonomous vehicles, cargo equipment, and vessels all depend on uninterrupted handovers. When devices move between access points and communication drops, operations can stall. 5G eliminates this issue, enabling fluid transitions and supporting autonomous machinery in ways Wi-Fi cannot.

  • Security by design– Private cellular networks use SIM-based authentication, keeping data entirely in-house. This prevents external breaches and gives ports far greater control over data sovereignty—critical as digitalisation accelerates.

Overall, 5G provides the reliability, low latency and security needed to support growing automation, decision-making systems, and digital services across the port environment.

Recently, the Port Authority of Valencia (APV) awarded Orange Spain the contract for the development and implementation of Valenciaport’s private 5G network, for a total amount of €6.9 million ($7.9 million).
