Porto Itapoá has acquired three fully electric empty loaders and one electric reach stacker, becoming the first Brazilian port terminal to operate this type of equipment.
In addition to the existing fleet, the Porto Itapoá has incorporated seven more electric terminal tractors (TTs), now totalling 27 units, the largest fleet of its kind in the country.
With the new equipment, Porto Itapoá now saves over 600,000 litres of fuel annually, avoiding the emission of approximately two thousand tonnes of greenhouse gases.
These figures add to the results already achieved in 2024, when the terminal avoided the consumption of 1.18 million litres of diesel and the emission of 4,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent.
Director of Operations, Technology, and Environment at Porto Itapoá, Sergni Pessoa Rosa Jr., emphasised that this acquisition marks a milestone for the Brazilian port sector: “We are not only fulfilling our environmental responsibilities but also proving that sustainability and operational efficiency can go hand in hand.
“Our investments in clean technology reflect our commitment to the sustainable development of the logistics sector.”

In 2025, Porto Itapoá renewed its I-REC (International Renewable Energy Certificate) international certification for using 100 per cent renewable energy in its operations throughout 2024. This recognition complements the recent advancements with the electric fleet, showcasing the terminal’s holistic commitment to sustainability across all operations.
The certification confirms that all the energy consumed by the port during the period came from renewable sources, including the newly acquired electric equipment.
“Maintaining this certification for consecutive years proves that our sustainability strategy is not temporary, but a structural part of our operations,” reinforced Sergni Pessoa Rosa Jr., highlighting that the port continues to expand its green initiatives in line with global best practices in the sector.
Earlier this April, Porto Itapoá joined Portchain Connect, a digital platform designed to enhance the speed and accuracy of berth alignment between ports and shipping lines.
