  • Forth Ports takes delivery of Liebherr LHM 550 for it bulk cargo and container operations

UK port operator Forth Ports has taken delivery of its first Liebherr LHM 550 mobile harbour crane at the Port of Tilbury.

The Liebherr crane, delivered fully assembled, will be used for the handling of bulk and containerised cargo.

With a lift capacity of 144 tonnes and boom length of 54 metres, the LHM 550 is the largest harbour mobile crane in use in the United Kingdom, weighing in at over 400 tonnes and standing 79 metres tall.

“The new crane is part of our continued expansion of capabilities at Tilbury,” said Peter Ward, senior asset manager at the Port of Tilbury.

“With the Liebherr up and working we are able to quickly and efficiently service the growing volume of bulk commodities business coming through the port.”

The crane arrived at the Port of Tilbury, situated on the River Thames, onboard the specially chartered vessel M/V Meri. The vessel loaded the crane at the Liebherr factory in Rostock, Northern Germany, following a four-day journey the vessel unloaded directly onto the quay side in Tilbury. The crane simply drove off the ship and on to the berth where it will be working.
