Port Metro Vancouver, Canada’s largest port, caught fire recently after a shipping container carrying chemicals erupted while stacked at the port. As a result, the port was evacuated and has since been closed down.

PTI previously reported on a ship that caught fire while docked at a port in South Korea.

The Huffington Post British Colombia reported Ron Coulson of Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services as saying “there are no injuries at this time. As this is a defensive fire, our fire-fighters are taking all precautions to stay out of the smoke plume and wear all the respiratory equipment that we have at our disposal.”

Port fires can potentially be fatal for ports and highlights the potential issues associated with inadequate packaging, stowage and labelling of hazardous chemicals.
