Port Klang Authority is forecasting itself to be ranked 11th in the World Container League for 2016 based on developments since its performance in 2015 when it went up one spot from 12th.

It has registered positive growth of 10.8% in 2016 with a total of 13,169,577 TEUs in container handling compared to 2015. The Port Klang Authority's Northport facility handled 3,223,544 TEUs while its Westports facility handled 9,946,033 TEUs.

This growth has been attributed to efficient and productive terminal operators, strong support of its shipping and logistics community and the port’s supply driven facilities, in addition to “advanced, state-of-the-art cargo handling equipment”.

Port Klang Authority also announced that strong cooperation and coordination between it and the terminal operators in resolving operational issues has raised the confidence level of port users.

Container throughput 2016:

  • Growth of 3.6 % compared to 2015, handling 2,063,736 TEU 
  • Northport – 802,993 TEU
  • Westports – 1,260,743 TEU

Export throughput 2016:

  • Growth of 3.9 % compared to 2015, handling 2,038,527 TEU 
  • Northport – 760,148 TEU
  • Westports – 1,278,379 TEU

Transshipment throughput 2016:

  • Growth of 14.3% compared to 2015, handling 9,067,314 TEU
  • Northport – 1,660,403 TEU
  • Westports – 7,406,911 TEU

Total Performance in TEU Jan to Dec 2015/2016 growth:

  • Container Throughput – 10.8%
  • Transshipment – 14.3%

Northport and Westports have announced that they will adopt green technology in port operations “embracing the government’s commitment towards enhancing environmental preservation and sustainable development of the port industry”. 

Port Klang Authority was presented the Green Ports Award Scheme (GPAS) by APEC Port Services Network (APSN) in November 2016 as its emission reduction and energy efficient technology is widely used in port vehicles and cargo equipment. Other initiatives include ship and domestic waste management system and the use of energy efficient lighting in the port areas.

The Port Klang Authority revealed this month (January 2017) that they plan to develop and build a new terminal on the nearby island of Pulau Carey.
