Denmark’s Kalundborg Port has completed a berth refurbishment to support relocated Samsølinjen ferry operations, with customised fender systems engineered to meet complex site conditions and reuse existing infrastructure.
Following service relocation, the ferry now operates from a new berth within Kalundborg Port.
To enable this shift, the existing berth was refurbished to accommodate ferry operations, with a strong emphasis on reusing existing infrastructure.
ShibataFenderTeam (SFT) worked closely with Molslinjen to deliver a tailored fender system for the new setup.
The scope included four Pile Fender Systems, each weighing around 16 tonnes and incorporating Double Cone Fenders (SPC 800, G2.1) with large steel panels measuring 3,700 × 11,545 millimetres (mm).
Two additional systems were provided using the same fender type, each with closed box panels of 2,400 × 4,400 mm, weighing approximately 7.5 tonnes.
Engineering complexity was heightened by the constraints of the existing berth geometry. The substructure design, in particular, required bespoke solutions, as no standardised approach could be applied.

Each of the four Pile Fender Systems needed uniquely engineered attachments to adapt to seabed variations.
The two additional systems also required custom steel substructures to align with legacy anchor points.
All fender panels were designed with an oversized chamfer on one side to prevent vessel beltings from catching during berthing manoeuvres.
Installation was carried out by Danish contractor Munck Havne, completing the delivery of a technically challenging and site-specific infrastructure upgrade.
The Samsølinjen route remains a vital link for regional connectivity, while the project at Kalundborg reflects an engineering-led approach to modernising existing maritime infrastructure.
