Ports play an important role in the energy transition. For this reason, the whole energy infrastructure, from production to storage, has to be examined, according to the Port of Rotterdam.

The Port of Rotterdam is looking for sustainable energy alternatives all around the world, which brings both possibilities and difficulties.

The Port of Rotterdam has reportedly been forced to accelerate its energy transition due to the disproportional supply and demand for energy, coupled with the exhaustion of traditional energy sources, scientific insights, and geopolitical changes.

As part of their energy transition agenda, the Port of Rotterdam secured shore power for Vlaardingen terminal late last year.

The Port of Rotterdam Authority also teamed up with Goodshipping in late 2022, to launch a campaign to reduce carbon emissions through providing a vessel with sustainable fuel.

The Port of Rotterdam plays a key role in the European energy transition as 13 per cent of the energy demanded in Europe is produced and imported in Rotterdam.

Nico van Dooren, Director of New Business Development and Portfolio from the Port of Rotterdam Authority, stated: “The Port of Rotterdam works with the entire ecosystem to accelerate the energy transition and is an example of a future sustainable energy hub.

“The port energy transition management programme offers a unique opportunity to use this knowledge and experience.”
