Port of Oakland's container volume up 8.5 per cent in January
The Port of Oakland began 2025 with a rise in both imports and exports, with loaded container volume reaching 146,187 TEUs in January 2025.

This is an 8.5 per cent increase over January 2024, when 144,405 TEUs went through the port.

Port of Oakland Maritime Director, Bryan Brandes, said: “Strong import growth reflects the resilience of Northern California’s economy and the confidence cargo owners have in our gateway.

“Export volumes remain steady, highlighting the continued global demand for US agricultural and manufactured goods.”

The port saw a significant increase in activity in January 2025, with loaded imports up by 13 per cent, processing 81,453 TEUs compared to 72,081 TEUs in the same month of 2024.

While loaded exports showed more modest growth, they still saw a positive increase of 3.4 per cent, with 64,735 TEUs processed in January 2025, up from 62,596 TEUs the previous year.

In contrast, empty imports saw a notable decline, dropping by 26.2 per cent, with only 12,625 TEUs entering the port in January 2025, down from 17,117 TEUs in January 2024.

However, empty exports made a strong rebound, rising by 19.8 per cent.

The port processed 34,363 TEUs in January 2025, compared to 28,694 TEUs in January 2024, reflecting an encouraging trend in outbound activity.

Recently, Port of Oakland officials announced their goals for the next five years at the annual ‘State of the Port’ event hosted by the Pacific Merchant Shipping Association (PMSA) and Women in Logistics.
