Liebherr Container Cranes Ltd. will supply the Maher Terminal at the Port of New York and New Jersey, with three new environmentally friendly Liebherr Megamax ship-to-shore container cranes (STS).
Announced by Liebherr Maritime Cranes, the cranes will add to the current fleet of eight Liebherr STSs already at the port, able to handle the world’s largest container vessels.
As the cranes are manufactured using high tensile steel with a lattice main beam and boom, they become lightweight and require less energy to operate than traditional cranes.
“Maher is a champion of sustainable port infrastructure and the Liebherr STS cranes are a key component of Maher’s comprehensive energy and environmentally management program. The cranes will assist Maher in becoming a Net Zero emissions facility by 2040 and Liebherr are proud to play its part in this bold initiative,” said the company in a social media post.
These new additions to the machinery will be beneficial as cargo volumes at the port continue to grow. This comes after the news it moved 780,782 TEU in August 2021, an increase of 14.9% compared to August 2019 and an increase of 2.9% compared to July 2021.
