The Port of New York and New Jersey has reported that total volume rose by 13.5 per cent, with 708,935 TEU (395,219 containers) moving through the port last June.
This increase brings the year-through June total to 4.2 million TEU (2.3 million containers).
June was the port’s fourth consecutive month surpassing 700,000 TEU, as well as its seventh consecutive month of year-over-year growth.
Imports were up 12.1 per cent in June versus the previous year, totalling 366,099 TEU (203,555 containers) and 326,681 TEU (181,496 containers).
From January through June 2024, imported loads at the Port of New York and New Jersey reached 2,158,055 TEU (1,199,783 containers), a 13.7 per cent increase when compared to the 1,897,496 TEU (1,056,540 containers) recorded in the same period of 2023.

June exports totalled 112,621 TEU (60,527 containers), a 10.9 per cent gain from the previous year’s 101,509 TEU (54,792 containers). Exported loads from January through June 2024 reached 683,522 TEU (366,746 containers), a 4.9 per cent increase from the 651,332 TEU (352,444 containers) recorded in the same period of 2023.
Export empties increased 17.7 per cent, totalling 228,575 TEU in June compared to 194,154 TEU the previous year. Export empties reached 1,356,548 TEU for January through June 2024, a 14.8 per cent rise from the 1,181,629 TEU posted in 2023. Import empties increased 26.3 per cent from January through June compared to the previous year.

A total of 52,474 containers were moved by rail in June at the Port of New York and New Jersey. While rail volume saw a slight decrease of 1.6 per cent from the previous year’s June figure, volume from January through June was 4.8 per cent greater than in the first half of 2023.
On the other side of the US, the Port of Long Beach witnessed its busiest July on record and the third-busiest month in its 113-year existence.
