Bayonne, United States - November 18, 2021: A container ship at GCT Bayonne container terminal

The Port of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) is the busiest port in the US for the second month in a row.

The port moved 842,219 TEU for September 2022.

September 2022 cargo volume increased by 34.8 per cent compared to September 2019.

The news comes as Port of Los Angeles box volumes have dropped by more than a fifth as the US West Coast ports continue to see plummeting container numbers.

The port handled 709,873 TEU in September 2022, a 21.5 per cent decrease from September 2021, which was the port’s busiest September on record.

Los Angeles’ news follows yesterday’s figures from the Port of Long Beach. Though not as severe a drop, the port moved 741,823 TEU of cargo containers in September, down 0.9 per cent from the same period in 2021.

The month for PANYNJ also marked 26 consecutive months of record-high cargo activity.

Cargo volume was similar to the level handled in August 2022, when the seaport handled 843,191 TEU.
