Port of Montreal welcomes first container ship directly from China

The Port of Montreal has welcomed the first-ever container vessel to arrive straight from China, without cargo transshipment in the Mediterranean.

Chartered by freight forwarder Fracht FWO, the Happy Rover docked at the port on 14 November 2021 at its Racine Terminal, operated by Montreal Gateways Terminal Partnership (MGTP). This demonstrates the growing trade relationship that Montreal has with Asia, as it now accounts for over 30% of its cargo volumes, usually handled through transshipment in the Mediterranean.

A direct, non-stop link between Montreal and Asia provides customers and businesses with an optimal solution in terms of supply chain fluidity and efficiency, benefitting from quick access to the Port of Montreal’s infrastructure and the performance of its connection rail and road networks.

“The first direct shipping line, without transshipment, between Asia and the Port of Montreal, demonstrates the fluidity of trade and the availability of our facilities in Montreal,” said Guillaume Brossard, Vice President of Growth and Development at the Montreal Port Authority.

“The Port of Montreal is pleased to be able to count on the efficiency and strength of its key supply chain partners. As a strategic asset, our main role is to ensure optimal service for the benefit of North American businesses and citizens. Our partner MGTP’s responsiveness and creativity help us fulfil our essential role at the heart of society.”

The Port of Montreal also welcomed the largest container ship to ever sail the St Lawrence in July 2021. Following the berth of the 6,730 TEU MSC Melissa, the port said it has continued to distinguish itself by offering shipping companies facilities that efficiently meet market demand for Quebec, Ontario, and the American Midwest.
