Port of Melbourne container throughput drops to 252,000 TEU

The Port of Melbourne has announced its August trade figures, which indicate a year-over-year (YoY) reduction in container throughput to 252,000 TEU.

Full container import volumes (excluding Bass Strait) fell in July 2024 compared to the previous year, while furniture, home appliances, and paperboard all outperformed last year.

However, full container export volumes (excluding the Bass Strait) increased over the previous year, with lumber, hay, chaff and fodder, barley, and meats all exceeding last year’s totals.

The port reported that overall empty container movements dropped in August 2024 compared to the previous year.

In July, the Port of Melbourne had a significant YoY increase in container throughput to 282,000 TEU.
