Port of Long Beach unveils $57 million green initiative
The Port of Long Beach has introduced two new incentive programs worth $57.4 million to help expedite emissions reductions by funding the acquisition of zero-emission cargo-handling equipment and cleaner harbour vessels.

SWIFT is a program financed by the California State Transportation Agency’s Port and Freight Infrastructure Program.

The port revealed that it is a initiative aimed at promoting port modernisation, improving commodities movement efficiency, and reducing environmental impacts on neighbouring communities.

Port of Long Beach CEO, Mario Cordero, said: “This programme is all about making strides in operational efficiency and sustainability, rapidly and responsibly. It is a reflection of not only our dedication to innovation but also our responsibility towards the community and the environment.”

Long Beach Harbor Commission, President Bonnie Lowenthal, stated: “SWIFT is more than a programme, it’s a promise to our community and to future generations. By accelerating the adoption of zero-emissions technologies, we are ensuring we provide immediate and lasting benefits to our port and our neighbouring communities.”

In January, the Port of Long Beach had its busiest month on record and the second-busiest ever, handling 952,733 TEUs — a 41.4 per cent increase from the previous month.
