San Pedro, United States - March 28, 2018: Ships, containers, and railways at the Port of Los Angeles, California; the busiest seaport on the west coast of the United States, shot wide angle from an altitude of about 1500 feet during a helicopter photo flight.

The Port of Los Angeles had one of its best years on record in 2019 with a cargo throughput of 9,337,632 TEU, just short of its second best 12 months in its 113-year history.

The announcement comes despite the US-China trade war, which has seen tariffs worth hundreds of billions of dollars being placed upon goods between the two largest economies.

Gene Seroka, CEO, said it had ” maintained strong momentum and kept cargo flowing”, in the face of “lagging exports due to international trade tensions and tariff uncertainties.

“This feat was only possible because of the extensive cooperation and continued efficiency improvements by our terminal operators, supply chain partners and longshore workforce.”

Seroka also put forward the Port of Los Angeles’ plans for 2020, including the US’ first Terminal Efficiency Incentive Program, designed to improve truck turn time.

“Depending on the percentage a terminal can reduce truck turn times, they will be monetarily rewarded on each container unit. The higher the percentage of reduction, the bigger the reward,” Seroka said.
