The Port of Gothenburg has inaugurated a new RoRo shipping route to Chinese ports via Singapore.
The cargo transported consists mostly of automobiles, but the newly constructed ships, which are powered by LNG, are also intended to carry project goods.
COSCO Shipping Specialized Carriers is in charge of the service, which will initially be offered once a month.
Erik Lund Eriksen, Partner Director at COSCO Shipping Lines Nordic, said: “Gothenburg is an important automotive hub in northern Europe, but until now has lacked a direct RoRo connection to Asia. We are very happy to start this service, which is highly demanded by our customers.”

COSCO Shipping is also seeking other forms of cargo, which the business sees as having a high potential for filling its vessels.
The new route stops in Singapore and three Chinese ports: Xinsha, Tianjin, and Shanghai.

The new ships are reportedly 199.9 metres long and 38 metres broad. With 13 decks and space for 7,500 automobiles, the ships resemble massive floating parking garages.
Four of the decks are height-adjustable, allowing them to transport a broad range of freight, including high and heavy cargo, as well as odd, bulky project loads in addition to vehicles.
Richard Mellgren, Senior Business Development Manager at the Port of Gothenburg, stated: “A direct RoRo line to Asia is a fantastic addition to the port’s overall offering which really strengthens both the port’s and our customers’ competitiveness.”
In September, the Port of Gothenburg inaugurated its brand-new 144,000-square-metre port terminal.
