The Port of Barcelona has handled more than 3.5 million TEU in 2022, yet its container throughput remains unchanged from 2021 (-0.3 per cent).

The port saw an increase in its Import containers by 3.4 per cent and an increase in its transit containers by 4.5 per cent.

Export containers had conversely decreased by 5.9 per cent.

According to the port, the slowdown in international maritime traffic is to explain the container traffic witnessed at the Port of Barcelona in 2022.

China, the Port of Barcelona’s principal market, reduced its imports by 29.5 per cent, while exports grew 1 per cent.

Countries such as the US or India saw increased container traffic by over 10 per cent.

The Port of Barcelona has passed the 70.9 million-tonne mark in total traffic during 2022, representing growth of 6.9 per cent from 2021.

This figure also represents a new record, beating the previous record of 67.8 million-tonnes set in 2018 by 4.6 per cent.

The Port of Barcelona closed the financial year 2022 with turnover of €181 million ($193 million), a year-on-year increase of 20 per cent.

This economic growth is partly due to the port’s Innovation Plan that placed emphasis on economic and social growth.

In early 2022, the Port of Barcelona also invested €110 million ($123 million) into its Nexigen project to decarbonise port activity and improve air quality.
