The Port of Barcelona has broken its record for container throughput volume during January – June this year.

Between January and June, 1.8 million TEU has passed through the Port of Barcelona, with a growth of 0.7 per cent.

The previous record was 1.7 million TEU moved a year ago.

General Director of the Port of Barcelona José Alberto Carbonell said traffic is not only above the movement of 2021 but has also grown by 6 per cent compared to 2019, which indicates that there is a clear full recovery back to pre-pandemic levels.

Total imports grew by 11 per cent. Exports, in contrasts, are 6 per cent below the records of 2021.

“It’s good news that indicates that the companies in our hinterland are working well and bravely to recover pre-pandemic levels”, said the President of the Port of Barcelona, Damià Calvet, at the results press conference held 26 July.

Port of Barcelona has advanced the awarding of the works of the new Llotja de Pescadors (Fisherman’s Market) to FCC Construcción for a total amount of €9.6 million ($9.74 million).

The port also announced the launch of a €7.2 million ($7.3 million) tender for the rehabilitation of the Moll Oriental pier and its transformation into a multifunctional complex. The work will take around 17 months.

Calvet highlighted recent progressions at the port including the launch of its Innovation Plan; the start of operations of the B2B Logistics Busan Barcelona Hub, the logistics platform driven by the ports of Barcelona and Busan, managed by FM Logistic and Taewoong Logistics; and the designation of Barcelona as the venue for the 2024 Americas Cup.
