The Port of Barcelona has hosted a Shanghai institutional and business delegation, signing a new cooperation agreement with the Shanghai Municipal Transportation Commission (SMTC) and the Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG).
The agreement was signed by José Alberto Carbonell, President of the Port of Barcelona, Xiao Hui, General Director of the SMTC, and Yang ZhiYong, Vice President of SIPG, in the presence of Jaume Duch, Regional Minister for European Union and Foreign Action.
The pact formally establishes a “sister ports” relationship between Barcelona and Shanghai, strengthening collaboration across port digitalisation, operational security, green port development, alternative fuels, intermodality, and the creation of sustainable maritime corridors linking the Far East and the Mediterranean.
Engagement between the two ports has intensified in recent years, beginning with a preliminary agreement in August 2025 and followed by a September 2025 technical visit led by Wang Haijian, Vice President and Director of Operations of SIPG, advancing plans for a Green Shipping and Digital Corridor between the two hubs.

That visit included working-level meetings on boosting trade and logistics flows between China and Europe, alongside a site visit to the Ebro-Chery facilities in the Barcelona Free Zone.
During the latest delegation, participants also visited the Autoterminal vehicle terminal, as discussions continue around the operational framework for the planned Green Shipping and Digital Corridor.
The Port of Barcelona said the agreement reinforces its role as a Euro-Mediterranean logistics hub while deepening its connectivity with one of the world’s largest port and industrial centres, with a clear focus on digitalisation and decarbonised maritime trade routes.
