HGT, Imetame advance major Brazil terminal project
Hanseatic Global Terminals (HGT) and the Imetame Group have completed the formation of Hanseatic Global Terminals Aracruz S.A.

The joint venture follows an agreement signed by the two companies in December 2025, with terminal operations expected to begin in mid-2028.

Located in the state of Espírito Santo, the facility is being developed to accommodate larger containerships and strengthen cargo connectivity along Brazil’s east coast.

The terminal will feature a 17-metre draft, 750 metres of quay length and an annual handling capacity of approximately 1.2 million TEUs.

The project is also expected to serve as both a transhipment hub and gateway for regional and international trade flows, supported by modern container handling equipment.

Dheeraj Bhatia, Chief Executive Officer of Hanseatic Global Terminals, said: “Latin America is a key strategic market for Hanseatic Global Terminals and Hapag-Lloyd.

“Our partnership with the Imetame Group and the development of the new Hanseatic Global Terminals Aracruz container terminal in Aracruz, Espírito Santo, will strengthen regional connectivity, expand capacity, and provide more efficient access to global markets.”

Etore Selvatici Cavallieri, Chairman of the Imetame Group, added: “We are proud to partner with Hanseatic Global Terminals in developing the new container terminal in Espírito Santo. Together, we aim to deliver operational excellence, create opportunities for the region, and further strengthen Brazil’s role in global trade.”

The development forms part of HGT’s wider expansion strategy in Latin America as the company seeks to grow its terminal portfolio to more than 30 facilities by 2030. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
