Pilbara Ports has launched the Ship WiFi Support Program to improve seafarer welfare by providing free ship-wide internet access at the Port of Port Hedland.
Replacing individual SIM card recharges, the program offers mobile WiFi and data top-ups for participating vessels on each port visit, ensuring all crew members can stay connected with loved ones and better support their mental health and wellbeing.

Pilbara Ports Executive General Manager Marine, Captain Philip Christy, said: “As professionals that are responsible for maintaining the smooth operations of large vessels calling at our ports, it’s imperative that we provide a safe and innovative way for seafarers to stay connected with loved ones.”
According to Pilbara Ports, vessels are encouraged to install the Ship WiFi Pack — featuring a Telstra-enabled mobile router and mesh extender — for remote data top-ups by the Port Hedland Seafarers Centre during each port call or anchorage stay.
In March, Pilbara Ports recorded a total throughput of 69.5 million tonnes (Mt), up 3 per cent from March 2024.
