Pilbara Ports has granted two contracts to support the Lumsden Point development, which is expected to provide employment and trade possibilities in Port Hedland.
The first contract is with Acciona Construction Australia Pty Ltd for the design and construction of two land-backed wharves.
The two new wharves will allow for the export of crucial battery metals like lithium and copper concentrates, as well as the import of renewable energy equipment like wind turbines and blades.

The second deal is with Konecranes for the delivery and construction of two mobile harbour cranes.
The harbour cranes will be critical to the smooth operation of Lumsden Point, allowing for the handling of large and enormous items.
Pilbara MLA, Kevin Michel, said: “The development will also enhance direct shipping services to the Pilbara, improving supply chain efficiency and strengthening the region’s position as a critical hub for global trade. The new Local Business Register is an excellent initiative that will ensure Pilbara businesses benefit from this major investment and contribute to the growth and development of our region.”

Western Australian Senator, Glenn Sterle, stated: “I’m pleased to see this project progressing, which will position not only Port Hedland, but northern Australia to take advantage of the economic opportunities this project will provide as demand grows locally and overseas for clean energy sources.
“The Australian Government’s investment in the Lumsden Point expansion will drive both employment and economic growth while delivering lasting infrastructure that will benefit the region well into the future.”
In November, Pilbara Ports achieved a total monthly throughput of 67 million tonnes (Mt).
