A video released by the Panama Canal Authority unveils plans to build a new training centre that is to be used for the preparing tugboat captains and pilots for when the expanded Panama Canal comes into operation.

PTI previously reported on an infographic, which detailed the workings of the Panama Canal's new toll structure, which will apply for all types of ships that traverse the canal’s waters.

The new training centre will be using ships that are 25 times smaller than the average size ship and the training will be provided by the centre for Simulation, Research and Maritime Development.

The Panama Canal’s final lock gate was also installed recently, with an infographic released by PTI showing the scale and functionality of the lock gates. Four new lock gates have been installed at the Atlantic side and the Pacific side.

A number of US ports have hastened to prepare for the surge in trade activity that will take place as a result of the expanded Panama Canal, with the Port of New York and New Jersey spending US$6 billion to modernise its container terminals and deepen its channel.
