A video released by the Panama Canal Authority shows the January, 2016 update of the ongoing expansion project, which is due to open in the second half of 2016.
The overall expansion project is now 96% complete, with the third set of locks currently at 95% completion. The construction of 32 buildings continues, after 4.4 milllion cubic metres of structural concrete was removed.
The flooding of a new channel began in September, 2015, and will contain approximately 19 cubic metres of water. The 13-kilometre culera cut has also been cut to meet the needs of larger ships.
