A Greek Deputy Captain has been killed following an attack on a Greek-owned cargo ship.

According to Reuters, the tanker was attacked by gunmen while the ship was waiting to load having sailed from China.

Three other crew members have since been taken hostage, while Greece’s shipping ministry has said that the rest of the crew are safe.

The vessel, called Kalamos, had a crew totalling 23 people and was sailing under a Maltese flag.

The attack took place at Qua Iboe, a sea area between Cameroon and Nigeria.

Thodoris Dritsas, Greece's Deputy Shipping Minister, said: “The foreign and shipping ministries have taken the necessary actions for the rescue of the hostages.”
