  • NYK Group takes 12.5% share in Chinese container terminal

Nippon Yusen Kaisha and Nippon Container Terminals Co. Ltd., a wholly-owned company of the NYK Group, have acquired a 12.5 percent stake in Yang Ming’s Kao Ming Container Terminal Corp. (KMCT) in Taiwan’s Kaohsiung Port.

KMCT was established as a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) project under the Port of Kaohsiung Intercontinental Container Terminal BOT with Kaohsiung Harbor Bureau.

The automated terminal, which opened in January 2011, handled 1.08 million TEU in its first year of operation.

The second-phase of the BOT project was started in 2012 and is scheduled to be completed in September 2014. This will result in a total of four berths at the box facility with a total length of 1,500 metres, and will be able to simultaneously accommodate four containerships of 14,000 TEU or above.

KMCT, located near the entrance to Kaohsiung’s second harbour, uses windmills and solar panels to generate power which has allowed the facility to cut projected CO2 emissions. KMCT emphasises energy conservation, a reduction of emissions, and protection of the environment, and successes in these areas have won it a reputation as one of the world’s greenest terminals.
