Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) and Ghelia, an artificial intelligence (AI) start-up financed by Sony, have formed a capital alliance.

NYK has made an investment in Gheila.

The two companies will now work together on research and development for autonomous ships, avoidance navigation, and other technologies.

This includes strengthening technology for safety throughout the shipping process and improving work efficiency in offices by introducing AI technologies.

The alliance will also see to strengthening next-generation technologies, such as the development methods and design of digital engineering and digital twins

“In the future, we expect to not only practically utilise AI technologies in NYK but also work on creating new value by providing AI services that lead the shipping industry,” said Executive Officer of NYK, Hideki Suzuki.

The partnership will also look to promote digital transformation (DX) by integrating Ghelia’s AI technology into the corporate and sales divisions of NYK’s business operations.

This comes after NYK introduced an Integrated Shipping System known as Veson IMOS Platform (IMOS) into its core system in October 2022, as part of its greater push to DX.
