Friday June 20 saw the Smart Cities & Smart Ports Conference take place in Madrid, Spain and the Spanish port engineering company, Siport21, were there to unveil a new product.

At the event, Siport21 presented a System for the Evaluation and Control of Maritime Safety in Port Access and Operations. This new product is aimed at improving decision making related to the access and/or the stay of the vessels at a port.

This evaluation system is intended for Port Authorities, Maritime Authorities, Terminal Operators and Port Pilot Organizations or Shipping companies, among others. It looks set to be an essential tool for the optimisation of ship operations, control of operational limits due to weather conditions or tide, increase of port capacity, assignment of optimised navigation assistance and optimisation of infrastructure development.

Siport21 believe that they will reinforce maritime safety by reducing the number of accidents and paying special attention to dangerous goods which might cause environmental damages. Another benefit is related to optimisation of operations, which leads to reduction of fuel consumption (ships, tugs, etc.) and emissions (CO2, NOx, SOx).

The Spanish company drew from their experience in ship manoeuvring and simulation for decision making in order to develop this system. Since 1999, Siport21 has also developed approximately 1.000 technical studies spread out over almost all the Spanish coast, and provided knowledge to 38 other countries. Siport21 is a pioneer in the installation and implementation of numerical ship manoeuvring models and ship manoeuvring simulators and it will be interesting to see the development of this decision making system.
